Food security and women empowerment between Myanmar and Thailandia

Between the coasts of Myanmar and Thailand, where fishing remains the main source of livelihood and ongoing environmental and political crises have heightened the vulnerability of local communities, MedAcross works to strengthen food security and promote women’s empowerment.

The Food Security and Women Empowerment project supports sustainable nutritional practices, enhances the management of natural resources, and improves access to healthcare, addressing chronic diseases linked to diet and nutrition. At the same time, it fosters women’s active participation through spaces for dialogue, training, and capacity building.
Within this framework, MedAcross also documents and records the traditional knowledge of forest communities to preserve and promote their understanding of the sustainable use of natural resources. These efforts contribute to strengthening food security by encouraging responsible forest management and greater diversification of food sources.
In both Myanmar and Thailand, women’s groups have been established and Community Health Workers (CHWs) have been trained, who now disseminate information on nutrition, hygiene, and health within their villages.
Despite the challenges posed by political instability, the project has already reached over 13,000 people and continues to foster more aware, resilient, and inclusive communities, where health and nutrition serve as instruments of autonomy and dignity.
