For children living in refugee camps outside the city of Hargeisa
The Horn of Africa is suffering a climate crisis due to continuous drought since 2020. The situation for pastoralist communities is dire: critical water shortages have forced families to migrate to urban and peri-urban centers in search of water for human and livestock consumption; since November, some 500,000 people have been displaced in search of food, water and pasture, adding to the 2.9 million people already displaced by conflict and climate change (OCHA Somalia, January 2022). In some areas, water prices have increased by up to 72 percent. Lack of water increases the risk of epidemics, and measles cases in 2021 have doubled since 2020.
In this context, MedAcross works with the support of Fondazione Specchio dei Tempi through a monthly pediatric mobile clinic service in the refugee camps around the city of Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland. We provide free check-ups for children in the camps, educate parents in the prevention of the most common diseases, and during dengue and cholera epidemics we carry out specific prevention campaigns.
