For Burmese refugees fleeing the regime.
The town of Ranong represents a focal point for Burmese migration to Thailand, being located 15 kilometers from the town of Kawthaung on the southern border with Myanmar. The proximity of these two towns has over time created a close trade link that facilitates border permeability. For this reason, Ranong currently has 33,279 foreign migrant workers reported by Thai employers, but the Ranong labor bureau has indicated that there are more than 100,000 illegal migrants in the district, (the number is underestimated after Covid-19 as it does not take into account Burmese day laborers who cross the Thai border for short periods). Most migrant workers are not supported by the Thai health care system mainly due to a lack of knowledge about health and labor rights on Thai territory.
In collaboration with local partner FED, MedAcross has set up a mobile clinic service that reaches Burmese migrant communities living in Ranong province every month, providing direct health care and training health volunteers in first aid, prevention and health rights.
