Development of the neonatal department in the hospital MAS, Hargeisa
In 2013, part of the doctors and professionals who now make up MedAcross decided to build a hospital in Somalia, for decades the scene of political and natural crises that has forced more than 130,000 people from their homes since the beginning of the year. The hospital was built in the north of Somalia, in Hargeisa the capital of the Somaliland region, a land at peace destination for millions of migrants from Somalia and Eritrea.Hargeisa was equipped with an efficient public children's hospital, built in 2 years that treated more than 55,000 children in its first 3 years of operation alone, creating training programs with the University of Turin for Somali health personnel. In 2015, as per agreement with the Minister of Health, the hospital was left under the management of the Somaliland authorities for its continued use.
From 2022 MedAcross doctors came back to Somaliland for an expansion of the neonatology department in the same hospital, and the establishment of pediatric mobile clinics for children in the many refugee camps outside the city of Hargeisa, which lack direct links to the hospital. During 2023, we implemented an annual course in Neonatology for the MAS medical staff with the contribution of many specialists from Turin, who committed themselves free of charge by conducting online courses and on-site missions. In addition, we donated the necessary equipment to improve the Neonatology department, ensuring the proper use of the machines in the hospital.
